The perception of “artisan” will continue to evolve throughout 2017.  There’s a charm to artisan made goods that have been emulated, often times successfully, by products that by definition are in fact not artisanal at all.  A good example of this is with craft beer, a booming market that captures the allure of a handmade products made in a microbrewery filled with state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment.  Why is this different from the many faux-artisan product lines in recent years? How did they redefine what is acceptably artisan? It’s becoming less about the product and more about who is being supported by choosing artisan.  Choosing artisan has a deep meaning, with personal connection to it, rooted in endorsing and supporting its creator.  Consumers will continue to opt to support small companies that produce high quality goods as an alternative to the American consumption based culture. With this artisan driven economy, these high value specialty products will have more opportunity to blend the traditional practices with modern digital technologies that will further transform the artisan concept or shift us into a
post-artisan trend.
