Description of Tolu Balsam

Tolu Balsam is a natural type of oleoresin extracted from the trunk of the Myroxylon balsamum tree. This material is often referred to as “Balsam” or simply “Balsamic Resin” due to its extremely low essential oil content. As such, tolu balsam typically undergoes additional preparation for use within fragrance and pharmaceuticals, where it imparts a powerfully sweet and balsamic aroma. In flavor, the material has a far more rich and spicy nuance, exemplified through a slightly bitter and “burning” top note. Balsam tolu makes an excellent fixative for in perfumery and is almost entirely soluble in alcohol, providing it with a variety of potential applications.
