The final commercial distillate of ylang-ylang commonly available, Ylang Ylang #3 is derived from the flowers of the Cananga odorata tree. The oil is sweet and floral, similar to other varieties of ylang-ylang, though its aroma also retains a woody and balsamic top note not present in other distillates. Ylang Ylang #3 finds heavy usage in personal care and aromatherapy products; it is particularly useful in soap perfumes as a replacement for lilac. This has earned ylang-ylang the nickname “poor man’s lilac,” though this nomenclature is hardly deserved, as the oil stands perfectly fine on its own.
